![]() One of Peppermint Patty's most troublesome traits, however, is her tendency to only hear what she wants to hear from others. In another strip she let Charlie Brown pitch the last throw of the game (Peppermint Patty pitched a no-hit, no-run game and were leading 50–0 on the 9th inning, 2nd out, 2nd strike), only to see Charlie Brown (obviously Lucy's fault), lose the game. However, she quits in disgust after only one game despite tossing a no-hitter and slamming five home runs, her new team loses, 37-5, because of their somewhat porous defense. In the first series of strips in which Patty appeared from 1966, she actually joins his team as its new pitcher, relegating Charlie Brown to the outfield. Peppermint Patty is a star athlete, especially in baseball, where her team regularly trounces Charlie Brown's squad. ![]() Finally, Peppermint Patty exacerbates her stupidity from these mortifications by then stubbornly blaming everyone who tried to warn her and she blindly ignored to her sorrow. Furthermore, when Patty went after Snoopy for this fiasco, she was convinced that the ferocious cat next door, World War II, was Snoopy in disguise for absolutely no rational reason and attacked him, forcing Snoopy to come to Patty's rescue. She later graduated and found out to her total humiliation later when the principal of her regular school explained what she had done. ![]() Furthermore, Peppermint Patty enrolled into the Ace Obedience School at Snoopy's recommendation, took the curriculum with the other dogs and never seriously questioned why she was the only human participating in that manner. Peppermint Patty's obtuseness got even more pronounced such as when she applied to a school for Gifted Children with a big sack expecting to receive things until the school representative explained to her embarrassment the complete misunderstanding she had about the institution. During a scuffle with Marcie, Snoopy's doghouse (which she thinks is a “guest cottage”) is destroyed, and Marcie finally convinces her friend that Snoopy is a beagle, not a "funny looking kid with a big nose." Her realization came during a period when she refused to go to school and instead attempted to stay with Snoopy. Peppermint Patty can be dimwitted until March 21, 1974, she did not realize that Snoopy was a dog. Peppermint Patty finds out that Snoopy is not human in the strip from March 21, 1974. This has been explained by saying that her father works late, and she is too insecure to sleep until he returns home. ![]() Peppermint Patty's bad grades are possibly exacerbated by her tendency to sleep through class. She also finds patterns in her true-or-false tests, and often says her answers out loud ("True! False! False! True!") In a series of strips from 1984, Peppermint Patty is held back a grade for failing all of her classes-only to be allowed to return to her old class when her old desk in front of Marcie starts to emit snoring noises, leading children and faculty alike to suspect that the classroom is haunted by a "snoring ghost". In one comic strip, she got a Z-, which she called "sarcasm". She is widely known for receiving a D− grade on every test or assignment in school (in 1999, the final full year of Peanuts, her teacher presented her with a certificate placing her in the "D-Minus Hall of Fame"). Peppermint Patty can often be very lazy, especially when it comes to school. cake were.Peppermint Patty is well known for her identity as a tomboy she often plays sports and is probably the jock of the Peanuts gang. ![]() ![]() Participants were assessed by a multidisciplinary team, on all occasions including an old age psychiatrist and a trained psychiatric nurse practitioner. Therefore, patients referred with severe dementia (Global Deterioration Scale greater than or equal to 6), 24 Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD), or compulsory referrals were not included. The inclusion criterion was the ability to give written informed consent. Between 20, all newly referred patients were eligible for this study. This study was performed in an old age (60 years +) psychiatry outpatient clinic in a large Dutch City (Utrecht), which offers services to the north‐west side of the city and its rural surroundings (57.000 inhabitants of 60+ in the north‐west). 18, 20 To illustrate this effect, we present as a secondary outcome the MoCA results in a case‐control design, using community‐based HC with normal cognitive aging as secondary comparisons. The above cross‐sectional design avoids the spectrum‐bias of most case‐control studies where the extremes of the spectrum of cognitive function were included. The reference standard consists of a multidisciplinary, consensus‐based diagnosis in accordance with international criteria. The purpose of the present study is to test the criterion validity (ie, can the MoCA predict a diagnose correctly) of the MoCA to detect MCI and early stage/mild dementia (MD) in an old age psychiatry cohort including referred but not cognitive impaired patients as primary comparisons. We aim to validate the MoCA in this clinical setting following the standards for reporting diagnostic accuracy (STARD 2015) 23 recommendations by using a cross‐sectional study design. 22Īccording to the Cochrane review, “the MoCA may help identify people requiring specialist assessment and treatment for dementia.” 18 Differentiation between cognitive impairment as a consequence of a psychiatric disease and/or as a consequence of early stage dementia is complicated and may affect the test‐characteristics of the MoCA. 18, 20 The MoCA has not yet been validated in old age psychiatry settings, where patients are referred with multidimensional causes for MCI 21 and to our knowledge our study is the first to do so. 18, 19, 20 This is especially relevant in case‐control study designs using community‐based healthy controls (HC), as this is not representative of the clinical reality. 17 It is important to validate the MoCA in specific settings, as the selection of subjects with different characteristics may influence the test characteristics of a scale such as the MoCA. The MoCA shows good validity in multiple languages, 2 although moderately so in Dutch in a geriatric memory clinic setting. Therefore, we need to know its diagnostic test accuracy in this setting. We introduced in our clinic a short cognitive assessment using the MoCA for all referred patients to lower doctors delay by adding an objective aid to triage those in need for specialized diagnostic route besides having baseline cognitive data. 10, 11 In The Netherlands, referrals to old age psychiatry consist of a mix of neurodegenerative and other psychiatric disorders, such as depression, bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, and severe anxiety disorders, all of which can be accompanied by poor cognitive functioning. ![]() By knowing patient's cognitive functioning at referral, besides timely detecting dementia also to monitor all causes of MCI in old age psychiatry, one can adapt their (psychiatric) treatment eg, pharmacotherapy (including compliance) or psychotherapy, especially as this population is at greater risk of changing cognitive functioning not only by age but also by (psychotropic) medication or because of the referral reasons. ![]() 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 However, the setting of old age psychiatry is different to our opinion. 3Įven though more and more advocacy groups or policy makers favor screening for dementia, there is still a debate if screening in various populations is wise. 2 The MoCA is recommended by the Alzheimer Society to objectively assess cognitive complaints in a clinical setting. It is widely used across the world in a variety of settings. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) 1 was developed as a brief screening test for mild cognitive impairment (MCI). ![]()

In 2011 the Times instituted a subscription plan for its digital edition that limited free access to content. Soon thereafter it began-like many industry publications-to struggle to redefine its role in the face of free Internet content. The following year the publication relocated to the newly constructed New York Times Building in Manhattan. In 2006 the Times launched an electronic version, the Times Reader, which allowed subscribers to download the current print edition. The publication introduced a subscription service called TimesSelect in 2005 and charged subscribers for access to portions of its online edition, but the program was discontinued two years later, and all news, editorial columns, and much of its archival content was opened to the public. The Times continued to utilize technology to expand its circulation, launching an online edition in 1995 and employing colour photography in its print edition in 1997. Later in the 1970s the paper, under Adolph Ochs’s grandson, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, introduced sweeping changes in the organization of the newspaper and its staff and brought out a national edition transmitted by satellite to regional printing plants. The publication of the “Pentagon Papers” brought the Times a Pulitzer Prize in 1972, and by the early 21st century the paper had won more than 120 Pulitzers (including citations), considerably more than any other news organization. Supreme Court found that the publication was protected by the freedom-of-the-press clause in the First Amendment of the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War that had been covertly given to the Times by government officials. In 1971 the Times became the centre of controversy when it published a series of reports based on the “ Pentagon Papers,” a secret government study of U.S. In its coverage of two world wars the Times continued to enhance its reputation for excellence in world news. The paper’s imaginative and risky exploitation of all available resources to report every aspect of the sinking of the Titanic in April 1912 greatly enhanced its prestige. Aided by an editor he hired away from the New York Sun, Carr Van Anda, Ochs placed greater stress than ever on full reporting of the news of the day, maintained and emphasized existing good coverage of international news, eliminated fiction from the paper, added a Sunday magazine section, and reduced the paper’s newsstand price back to a penny. Ochs built the Times into an internationally respected daily. ![]() Despite price increases, the Times was losing $1,000 a week when Adolph Simon Ochs bought it in 1896. But its high moral tone was no asset in the heated competition of other papers for readers in New York City. It enjoyed early success as its editors set a pattern for the future by appealing to a cultured, intellectual readership instead of a mass audience. The Times was established in 1851 as a penny paper that would avoid sensationalism and report the news in a restrained and objective fashion. Its strength is in its editorial excellence it has never been the largest newspaper in terms of circulation.
